TheropodaMicroraptor zhaoianus Xu et al., 2000
A four-winged, iridescent feathered dromaeosaurid that glided through Early Cretaceous Chinese forests.
TheropodaAcrocanthosaurus atokensis Stovall & Langston, 1950
A high-spined North American apex predator famous for hunting sauropods across Early Cretaceous river valleys.

Diet & Trophic Role | Carnivore Arboreal mammals, small lizards, fish, and early birds preserved in gut contents. | Carnivore Hunted sauropods like Sauroposeidon and ornithopods like Tenontosaurus. |
Taxonomic Clade | Theropoda(Suborder) | Theropoda(Suborder) |
Fossil Localities | Jiufotang Formation, Liaoning, China Named: 2000 | Antlers Formation, Atoka County, Oklahoma, United States Named: 1940 |
Locomotion & Behavior | Small, arboreal four-winged dromaeosaurid capable of biplane gliding between forest canopies. Preserved in the Jehol Biota of Liaoning, Microraptor foraged for small vertebrates alongside other feathered contemporaries including [Sinornithosaurus](/dinosaurs/sinornithosaurus) and ground-dwelling [Caudipteryx](/dinosaurs/caudipteryx). | Apex pursuit predator that shared the Early Cretaceous coastal plain ecosystem with contemporary dromaeosaurids like [Deinonychus](/dinosaurs/deinonychus) and large ornithopods like [Tenontosaurus](/dinosaurs/tenontosaurus). Trackway assemblages and body fossils indicate it operated as the dominant carnivore across these ancient river deltas. |
Holotype & Fossils | Hundreds of exceptionally preserved slabs showing intact skeletons with full feather halos and melanosomes. | Spectacular complete specimen 'Fran' (NCSM 14345) mounted at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. |
