TheropodaVelociraptor mongoliensis Osborn, 1924
A turkey-sized, feathered dromaeosaurid predator of the Late Cretaceous Gobi Desert, armed with specialized sickle claws.
TheropodaDeinonychus antirrhopus Ostrom, 1969
The agile dromaeosaurid whose discovery catalyzed the modern Dinosaur Renaissance and established the dinosaur-bird evolutionary link.

Locomotion & Behavior | Direct behavioral evidence is immortalized in the world-renowned 'Fighting Dinosaurs' fossil (MPC-D 100/25), in which an articulated Velociraptor was buried by a sudden sand collapse while locked in combat with a herbivorous [Protoceratops](/dinosaurs/protoceratops). Its claws were clamped onto the prey's frill and snout while its body was held in the ceratopsian's jaws. Pack-hunting behaviors popularized in media lack unambiguous fossil trackway or bonebed support, with modern interpretations favoring solitary foraging or opportunistic multi-predator feeding. | Agile predatory dromaeosaurid armed with large sickle-shaped second pes claws used to grip struggling prey. In the Cloverly Formation, multiple Deinonychus skeletons are preserved in direct association with large carcasses of the ornithopod [Tenontosaurus](/dinosaurs/tenontosaurus), while coexisting with apex allosauroids like [Acrocanthosaurus](/dinosaurs/acrocanthosaurus). |
Holotype & Fossils | Documented by numerous articulated and associated specimens from the Djadokhta Formation of Mongolia. Key material includes the AMNH 6515 holotype skull and partial skeleton excavated in 1923, as well as exceptionally preserved three-dimensional skeletons in fine eolian sandstones exhibiting intact skulls, quill knobs, and ossified tendons. | Multiple articulated individuals found associated with Tenontosaurus skeletons (YPM 5205 holotype). |
