Locomotion & Behavior | Feathered dromaeosaurid theropod possessing long recurved claws and structurally complex plumage. Preserved in the fine volcanic lake sediments of Liaoning, Sinornithosaurus shared the Early Cretaceous forest ecosystem with arboreal gliders like [Microraptor](/dinosaurs/microraptor) and ground omnivores like [Caudipteryx](/dinosaurs/caudipteryx). | Apex pursuit predator that shared the Early Cretaceous coastal plain ecosystem with contemporary dromaeosaurids like [Deinonychus](/dinosaurs/deinonychus) and large ornithopods like [Tenontosaurus](/dinosaurs/tenontosaurus). Trackway assemblages and body fossils indicate it operated as the dominant carnivore across these ancient river deltas. |
Holotype & Fossils | Nearly complete articulated skeleton with intricate plumaceous feather impressions (IVPP V12811). | Spectacular complete specimen 'Fran' (NCSM 14345) mounted at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. |
