Fossil Localities | Lance Formation, Niobrara County, Wyoming, United States Named: 1891 | Dinosaur Park Formation, Alberta, Canada Named: 1902 |
Locomotion & Behavior | Massive horned ceratopsian featuring one of the largest skulls of any land animal, with an expansive frill bearing large circular fenestrae. Inhabiting the Hell Creek and Lance Formations, Torosaurus lived sympatrically with its close relative [Triceratops](/dinosaurs/triceratops) and contemporary apex predator [Tyrannosaurus rex](/dinosaurs/tyrannosaurus-rex). | Gregarious horned herbivore that gathered in massive herds numbering hundreds of individuals, as demonstrated by catastrophic bonebed deposits. In the Dinosaur Park Formation, Centrosaurus coexisted with fellow ceratopsians like [Styracosaurus](/dinosaurs/styracosaurus) and duck-billed hadrosaurs like [Corythosaurus](/dinosaurs/corythosaurus). |
Holotype & Fossils | Multiple gigantic articulated skulls and postcrania from Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota. | Megabonebeds in Dinosaur Provincial Park yielding thousands of bones and dozens of intact skulls. |
