TheropodaCaudipteryx zoui Ji et al., 1998
A ground-dwelling basal oviraptorosaur from Liaoning, China preserving true vaned feathers and gastroliths.
TheropodaAcrocanthosaurus atokensis Stovall & Langston, 1950
A high-spined North American apex predator famous for hunting sauropods across Early Cretaceous river valleys.

Epoch Horizon | Cretaceous Period 125–124 Ma (million years ago) | Cretaceous Period 113–110 Ma (million years ago) |
Diet & Trophic Role | Omnivore Seeds, shoots, and small invertebrates ground in an internal gastrolith gizzard. | Carnivore Hunted sauropods like Sauroposeidon and ornithopods like Tenontosaurus. |
Taxonomic Clade | Theropoda(Suborder) | Theropoda(Suborder) |
Fossil Localities | Yixian Formation, Sihetun, Liaoning, China Named: 1997 | Antlers Formation, Atoka County, Oklahoma, United States Named: 1940 |
Locomotion & Behavior | Fast-running ground-dwelling omnivore utilizing gastroliths in its gizzard to grind plant material and seeds. Preserved in the volcanic lacustrine beds of the Jehol Biota, Caudipteryx coexisted alongside other feathered maniraptorans including [Sinornithosaurus](/dinosaurs/sinornithosaurus) and four-winged [Microraptor](/dinosaurs/microraptor). | Apex pursuit predator that shared the Early Cretaceous coastal plain ecosystem with contemporary dromaeosaurids like [Deinonychus](/dinosaurs/deinonychus) and large ornithopods like [Tenontosaurus](/dinosaurs/tenontosaurus). Trackway assemblages and body fossils indicate it operated as the dominant carnivore across these ancient river deltas. |
Holotype & Fossils | Multiple complete articulated skeletons with preserved pennaceous feathers and gizzard gastroliths. | Spectacular complete specimen 'Fran' (NCSM 14345) mounted at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. |
