TheropodaDeinonychus antirrhopus Ostrom, 1969
The agile dromaeosaurid whose discovery catalyzed the modern Dinosaur Renaissance and established the dinosaur-bird evolutionary link.
TheropodaAcrocanthosaurus atokensis Stovall & Langston, 1950
A high-spined North American apex predator famous for hunting sauropods across Early Cretaceous river valleys.

Diet & Trophic Role | Carnivore Medium-sized ornithopods (Tenontosaurus tilletti), small lizards, and early mammals. | Carnivore Hunted sauropods like Sauroposeidon and ornithopods like Tenontosaurus. |
Taxonomic Clade | Theropoda(Suborder) | Theropoda(Suborder) |

Locomotion & Behavior | Agile predatory dromaeosaurid armed with large sickle-shaped second pes claws used to grip struggling prey. In the Cloverly Formation, multiple Deinonychus skeletons are preserved in direct association with large carcasses of the ornithopod [Tenontosaurus](/dinosaurs/tenontosaurus), while coexisting with apex allosauroids like [Acrocanthosaurus](/dinosaurs/acrocanthosaurus). | Apex pursuit predator that shared the Early Cretaceous coastal plain ecosystem with contemporary dromaeosaurids like [Deinonychus](/dinosaurs/deinonychus) and large ornithopods like [Tenontosaurus](/dinosaurs/tenontosaurus). Trackway assemblages and body fossils indicate it operated as the dominant carnivore across these ancient river deltas. |
Holotype & Fossils | Multiple articulated individuals found associated with Tenontosaurus skeletons (YPM 5205 holotype). | Spectacular complete specimen 'Fran' (NCSM 14345) mounted at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. |
